well, a disturbing new survey shows that pork contains a high level of bacteria that causes food poisoning. >> researchers from consumer reports tested samples from supermarkets in six cities. abc's dr. richard besser tells us exactly what they found. >> reporter: you don't know its name, but you may be one of the 100,000 americans who get sick each year from a bacteria.

and the study explains why. consumer reports tested pork, the type you buy in the supermarket. pork chops, ground pork. they found that 70% of the samples they tested hat yersinia on them. ground pork turned out to be more risky than pork chops. >> this should be a wake-up call to the american public. what are we doing in terms of monitoring the safety of pork and what can we do in the future. >> reporter: this bacteria can hit hard. in a matter of days you experience fever, cramps, bloody diarrhea that may last for weeks, especially common in children. cooking the pork thoroughly does kill the backterbacteria, but b ulf. it's easy to spread it to the surfaces of your kitchen. the plate, the cutting board, your hand. anything the raw pork touched. take a look at this kitchen where we handled meat.

skinny." don't want to miss that. but we do begin with breaking news this morning about that horrific factory fire in bangladesh. >> this is hard to even get your mind around. police have arrested three managers and accused them of locking the doors so the workers could not get out. the 112 people died in the fire, records show workers made clothes for wal-mart, sears as well as our parent company disney. >> bangladesh police say the managers stopped workers from leaving saying the alarm was just a routine fire drill. police also questioned the company's owner about alleged violations of building codes after inspectors found the nine-story building only had permission for three floors. incomprehensible that three workers accused of locking the doors so they could not escape. >> unbelievable. you can imagine the investigation that has to follow and the arrests and the criminal

action lawsuits all stemming from that. certainly as we said breaking news this morning. abc will follow that throughout the day. a stunning and heartbreaking development. >> several ramifications, as you just said. now to capitol hill, ambassador susan rice returns there today for high-level meetings with republican critics. >> yesterday's attempts to smooth things over with three gop lawmakers did not end too well. here's abc's jonathan karl. >> reporter: talk about a test of diplomatic skills, susan rice on capitol hill meeting with republicans determined to stop her from becoming secretary of state. rice herself asked for the meetings, but the effort to smooth things over didn't exactly work. the senators demanded answers on why she tied the attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi, libya, to an anti-muslim video. they didn't like what they heard. >> the concerns i have are greater today than they were before, and we're not even close to getting basic answers. >> it is clear the information she gave the american people was incorrect. >> reporter: the president hasn't yet decided who he will nominate to replace hillary

clinton as secretary of state, but rice is the leading candidate. >> if i think she would be the best person to serve america in the capacity, the state department, then i will nominate her. >> reporter: behind closed doors, rice acknowledged some of what she said about the libya attack was wrong but that the information came directly from the cia. same is true of condoleezza rice who passed on incorrect cia information on weapons of mass destruction in iraq, but was still overwhelmingly confirmed as secretary of state. susan rice is closer to the president than anybody in his cabinet and has been an overachiever for most of her life. high school valedictorian, basketball star, rhodes scholar, rising star in the clinton administration, but she also has a reputation for blunt talk. >> by all accounts, she is talented, capable, and extremely abrasive. >> reporter: in the 2008 campaign she ridiculed hillary clinton's foreign policy experience and called john mccain reckless and confused. if the president does nominate

her, those who know susan rice well say she's more than up for the fight, and although it would be a bruising confirmation battle, she almost certainly would have the votes to be confirmed. jonathan karl, abc news, washington. interesting parallel that story points out between condoleezza, confirmation process, and this one. "the washington post," interesting profile, i like the human nuggets they find. as u.n. ambassador she gained a reputation for sharp intellect. and sharp elbows. she is not known for diplomatic finesse, known for being aggressive sometimes too aggressive and using salty language on occasion. in private she has a good sense of humor. trying to dig up some humanity on her as well, but clearly she's a bulldog behind closed doors. >> they wouldn't indicate whether or not they would block the nomination if it gets to the point. the president has not nominated her to this point, we just want to make that clear. but some of the beef that some republicans have with her, if you can only provide -- if you

have nothing but bad information, isn't it better to give no information at all, just to say we are still sorting it out. >> someone made that point i you don't know. shut up until you do. and these three gop senators were not pleased. also met with joe lieberman, independent. he had a lot of high praise for her after the meeting. getting a mixed bag of response. we will see what happens if the president does nominate her. >> you remember back in 2006 the democrats blocked bush's nomination for secretary of state john bolton, what republicans are using that. >> exactly. another one who had a reputation for being an aggressive bulldog too. history repeats itself, i guess. moving on to other news this morning, tampa socialite jill kelley, of course, caught up in the big petraeus sex scandal, well, now she's fighting back.

attorneys hired by kelley are going after a new york man who claimed kelley tried to use her connection to former cia director david petraeus to broker a deal with the south korean government. this morning's "the new york times" reports that the investigation into e-mails between kelley and general john allen is focused on only 70 messages of the thousands that were allegedly exchanged. we may hear from the army private charged with the biggest security breach in u.s. history. bradley manning accused of spilling secrets to wikileaks will, testify at a pretrial hearing as early as tomorrow. manning faces possible life imprisonment if convicted of aiding the enemy. the most serious of the 22 charges against him. with the recovery costs from hurricane sandy continuing to mount, the obama administration is preparing to request more money. the white house is expected to ask congress for billions of dollars in additional aid in the wake of the storm. congressional officials say the request could top $11 billion. and could come in the next few days. the storm caused more than $70 billion in damage both in new york and new jersey. some say the second costliest u.s. disaster ever. and that jersey shore roller coaster that was swept off the pier and into the ocean by the storm is going to be removed after all.

the mayor of seaside heights say as what remains of that still partially submerged roller coaster would make great tourist attraction, but as he now puts it, that was not the brightest comment. recovery efforts here in new york are getting a shot in the arm today thanks to firefighters from new orleans. they flew out yesterday and are starting to help their counterparts from the fdny today calling the two-week effort "big easy to the big apple." it's all payback from the aftermath of hurricane katrina when firefighters went in the opposite direction. all of a sudden one day the cavalry from new york showed up. that was an uplifting moment for us. but more than that, once we were finished fighting fires and once we were finished wrestling people out of the water, the guys stood around and did the dirty work. they went to our houses, guarded our house, helped move debris, and even cut our grass.

>> wow. unbelievable. after katrina, 600 firefighters from new york went to new orleans, southwest airlines donating round trip flights for the firefighters. i love that they stuck around down in new orleans to just help them in their daily life. >> absolutely. if any city feels the pain of the northeast right now it is new orleans along the gulf coast for sure. nicely done, fellows. people in northern california are preparing for their first major wet storm of the season. a super soaker expected to stick around right through the weekend. free sandbags were given away ahead of the drenching rain that could trigger flooding as well as mud slides. the storm is also stirring up 70-mile-an-hour winds and up to 2 feet of wet snow in the mountains. in pennsylvania a snowstorm that made a mess of the morning commute triggered crash after crash in the central and eastern part of the state. semitrucks jackknifed in the poconos, and cars ran off the road. some drivers were stuck in traffic for hours. several children suffered minor injuries actually when their school bus overturned in the middle of all that slippery mess. and with that, here's a look

the 89-year-old dole, 1996 republican presidential nominee. he has been hospitalized at walter reed army medical center. a spokeswoman for dole says he is doing very well. there has been more fallout from the botched apple maps application. richard williamson was fired just before thanksgiving according to sources. he is the second apple executive to lose his job over that app. the problem started when apple replaced google maps with its own. the company ceo was forced to apologize after the app did not work very well. i can attest to that from personal experience. they have a lot of fixing to do. just saying. >> i thought it was just operator error on my part. >> hmm-mm. and now a developing disturbing story this morning where three managers at that factory in bangladesh where a fire killed more than 100 people have been arrested. those managers are accused of locking the doors and preventing workers from escaping. investigators say the managers told employees that it was all just a fire drill and they had nothing to worry about.

records found at the scene show the factory made clothing for walmart, sears, as well as our parent company disney. and now to chicago and a legal fight over unpaid parking tickets that total over $100,000. a woman has racked those fines because her car was parked at o'hare airport in the long-term parking lot for three years. she claims the monte carlo belongs to her ex-boyfriend who registered it in her name without her knowing about it. well, one consumer advocate says no one should foot the bill because the city should have towed the car. >> if they go back and look at the law, i think they'll realize that they're the ones that perhaps made the biggest mistake and should really in my opinion let this young woman off the hook for this vast majority of these tickets. >> the woman, as you can imagine, is now suing her boyfriend and the city of chicago.

the car was not considered abandoned by the city balls it was moved a number of times, within that same lot. >> come on, chicago. do her right. a month after hurricane sandy, the obama administration is preparing to ask for more money for the recovery. the white house is expected to make the request to congress for billions of dollars in additional aid. congressional aides say the request which could top $11 billion is likely to come in the next couple of days. damage from sandy tops $70 billion in new york and new jersey alone. and damage from downpours and flooding taking its toll across parts of great britain. flood watches and warnings are up for nearly all of wales and england. at least one death, an elderly woman, is being blamed on floodwaters in northern wales. 500 homes had to be evacuated. >> we're seeing way too many of those scenes in recent weeks. wow. and now a look at your forecast on this wednesday. al major storm brings downpours

only 8 cents out of a dollar to produce it. >> reporter: there are a lot of winners. >> there are tons of winners. >> reporter: more good news for states looking for a boost to their budget. amy robach, abc news, new york. >> good luck, everybody. well, brand-new retail analysis confirms the holiday shopping season is off to a very solid extort. in-store traffic was up more than 8% over the four-day holiday weekend starting oven, of course, thanksgiving. sales were up nearly 3% from last year, with the shoppers spending 22 billion bucks. that's according to sales numbers from 40,000 stores. oil giant bp pleading not guilty in connection with its rig explosion and oil spill disaster, but it was just a temporary legal maneuver in federal court which paves the way for bp's guilty plea, facing manslaughter, obstruction of congress, and other charges, and company lawyers fully intend to honor a plea agreement and

pay $4.5 billion in penalties. bp meets with the justice department about that guilty plea next month. and big tobacco companies are expected to fight a judge's order that they admit to lying about the dangers of smoking. under that order, the companies must also disclose the smoking's health effects, including the 1,200 deaths a day linked to tobacco. statements are the result of a long-running government suit against big -- tobacco companies. overseas syrian rebels have new weapons, stinger missiles. video posted online appears to show rebel forces downing a helicopter in western aleppo yesterday. look at that. rebels stockpiling weapons rebels have been stockpiling weapons, including those seized friday the syrian military and are hailing the shootdown as a turning point in the country's ongoing and deadly civil war.

in egypt, cairo's tahrir square is a tinderbox as protests against president morsi continue to grow. more than 200,000 people jammed the square to demonstrate against morsi's brazen power grab. tensions are growing across egypt, and alex marquadt reports now from cairo. >> reporter: the birthplace of egypt's revolution once again ringing with calls for the downfall of a dictator. this time it's for this man, president mohamed morsi, whom america relies on to be a regional peace broker. last week he granted himself unchecked power, leading to today's bloody clashes. the crowd is chanting the same chants we heard two years ago during the revolution, except that they have substituted mubarak for morsi. egyptians toppled president hosni mubarak, a dictator who ruled for three decades. they then held a historic election, voted in the new president, and now --

well, a disturbing new survey shows that pork contains high levels of bacteria that causes food poisoning. >> researchers from consumer reports tested samples from supermarkets in six cities. abc's dr. richard besser tells us exactly what they found. >> reporter: you don't know its name, but you may be one of the 100,000 americans who get sick each year from a bacteria called yersinia, and the study explains

why. consumer reports tested pork, the types you'd buy in the supermarket, including pork chops and ground pork. they found that 70% of the samples they tested had yersinia on them. ground pork turned out to be more risky than pork chops. >> this should be a wake-up call to the american public. what are we doing in terms of monitoring the safety of pork and what can we do in the future. >> reporter: this bacteria can hit hard. in a matter of days, you'll experience fever, cramps, bloody diarrhea that may last for weeks, especially common in children. cooking the pork thoroughly does kill the bacteria, but be careful. it's easy to spread it to the surfaces of your kitchen. the plate, the cutting board, your hand. anything the raw pork touched. take a look at this kitchen where we handled meat. all of the dots, germs. the pork producers council questioned the quality and methods used by consumer report.

skinny." don't want to miss that. but we do begin with breaking news this morning about that horrific factory fire in bangladesh. >> this is hard to even get your mind around. police have arrested three managers and accused them of locking the doors so the workers could not get out. the 112 people died in the fire, where records show workers made clothes for walmart, sears, as well as our parent company disney. >> bangladesh police say the managers stopped workers from leaving saying the alarm was just a routine fire drill. police also questioned the company's owner about alleged violations of building codes after inspectors found the nine-story building only had permission for three floors. but incomprehensible that three workers accused of locking the doors so they could not escape. >> unbelievable. you can imagine the investigation that has to follow and the arrests and the criminal action lawsuits all stemming from that.

certainly as we said breaking news this morning. abc will follow that throughout the day. but that's stunning and heartbreaking development. >> several ramifications, as you just said. >> mm-hmm. now to capitol hill, ambassador susan rice returns there today for high-level meetings with republican critics. >> yesterday's attempts to smooth things over with three gop lawmakers did not end too well. here's abc's jonathan karl. >> reporter: talk about a test of diplomatic skills, susan rice on capitol hill meeting with republicans determined to stop her from becoming secretary of state. rice herself asked for the meetings, but the effort to smooth things over didn't exactly work. the senators demanded answers on why she tied the attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi, libya, to an anti-muslim video. they didn't like what they heard. >> the concerns i have are greater today than they were before, and we're not even close to getting basic answers. >> it is clear that the information that she gave the american people was incorrect. >> reporter: the president hasn't yet decided who he will nominate to replace hillary clinton as secretary of state, but rice is the leading candidate.

>> if i think that she would be the best person to serve america in the capacity in the state department, then i will nominate her. >> reporter: behind closed doors, rice acknowledged some of what she said about the libya attack was wrong but that the information came directly from the cia. same is true of condoleezza rice who passed on incorrect cia information on weapons of mass destruction in iraq, but was still overwhelmingly confirmed as secretary of state. susan rice is closer to the president than anybody in his cabinet and has been an overachiever for most of her life. high school valedictorian, basketball star, rhodes scholar, rising star in the clinton administration, but she also has a reputation for blunt talk. >> by all accounts, she is talented, capable, and extremely abrasive. >> reporter: in the 2008 campaign she ridiculed hillary clinton's foreign policy experience and called john mccain reckless and confused. if the president does nominate her, those who know susan rice well say she's more than up for the fight, and although it would

be a bruising confirmation battle, she almost certainly would have the votes to be confirmed. jonathan karl, abc news, washington. interesting parallel that story points out between condoleezza, confirmation process, and this one. "the washington post," interesting profile, i like the human nuggets they find. as u.n. ambassador she has gained a reputation for sharp intellect and sharp elbows. she is not known for diplomatic finesse, known for being aggressive sometimes too aggressive and using salty language on occasion. in private she has a good sense of humor. trying to dig up some humanity on her as well, but clearly she's a bulldog behind closed doors. >> they still wouldn't indicate whether or not they would block that nomination if it gets to that point. the president has not nominated her to this point, we just want to make that clear. but some of the beef that some republicans have with her, if you can only provide -- if you have nothing but bad information, isn't it better to give no information at all, just to say, you know, we're still sorting that out.

>> graham made that point. that's true. if you don't know, shut up until you do. and these three gop senators were not pleased. also met with joe lieberman, independent. he had a lot of high praise for her after the meeting. so you're getting a mixed bag of response. we'll see what happens if the president does nominate her. >> you remember back in 2006 the democrats blocked bush's nomination for secretary of state john bolton, what republicans are using that. >> exactly. another one who had a reputation for being an aggressive bulldog too. so history repeats itself, i guess. moving on to other news this morning, tampa socialite jill kelley, of course, caught up in the big petraeus sex scandal, well, now she's fighting back. attorneys hired by kelley are going after a new york man who claimed kelley tried to use her connection to former cia director david petraeus to broker a deal with the south korean government. 'this morning's "new york times" reports that the investigation into e-mails between kelley and general john allen is now focused on only about 70

messages of the thousands that were allegedly exchanged. and we may soon hear from the army private charged with the biggest security breach in u.s. history. bradley manning accused of spilling secrets to wikileaks will, testify at a pretrial hearing as early as tomorrow. manning faces possible life imprisonment if convicted of aiding the enemy, the most serious of the 22 charges against him. with the recovery costs from hurricane sandy continuing to mount, the obama administration is preparing to request more money. the white house is expected to ask congress for billions of dollars in additional aid in the wake of the storm. congressional officials say the request could top $11 billion and could come in the next few days. the storm caused more than $70 billion in damage both in new york and new jersey. some say the second costliest u.s. disaster ever. and that jersey shore roller coaster that was swept off the pier and into the ocean by the storm is going to be removed after all.

the mayor of seaside heights say as what remains of that still partially submerged roller coaster would make great tourist attraction, but as he now puts it, that was not the brightest comment. and recovery efforts here in new york are getting a shot in the arm today thanks to firefighters from new orleans. they flew out yesterday and are starting to help their counterparts from the fdny today calling the two-week effort "big easy to the big apple." it's all payback from the aftermath of hurricane katrina when firefighters went in the opposite direction. all of a sudden one day the cavalry from new york showed up. that was an uplifting moment for us. but more than that, once we were finished fighting fires and once we were finished res coug people out of the water, the guys stood around and did the dirtdy work. they went to our houses, guarded our house, helped move debris, and even cut our grass. >> wow. that's unbelievable.

after katrina, 600 firefighters from new york went to new orleans, southwest airlines donating round trip flights for the firefighters. i love that they stuck around down in new orleans to just help them in their daily life. >> absolutely. if any city feels the pain of the northeast right now it is new orleans along the gulf coast for sure. nicely done, fellows. well, people in northern california are preparing for their first major wet storm of the season. a supersoaker expected to stick around right through the weekend. free sandbags were given away ahead of the drenching rain that could trigger flooding as well as mud slides. the storm is also stirring up 70-mile-an-hour winds and up to 2 feet of wet snow in the mountains. in pennsylvania a snowstorm that made a mess of the morning commute triggered crash after crash in the central and eastern part of that state. semitrucks jackknifed in the poconos, and cars literally ran off the road. some drivers were stuck in traffic for hours. several children suffered minor injuries actually when their school bus overturned in the middle of all that slippery mess. and with that, here's a look at your wednesday weather, hopefully a bit calmer for most folks. it will be drying out on the k
